Whey protein, often referred to simply as "whey," is a by-product created during the cheese-making process. However, the whey protein we consume is a highly refined, fat-free, and enriched version. Milk is made up of 87% water and 13% solids, with 27% of that being protein. Only 20% of this protein is whey, meaning that 100 grams of milk contains less than 1 gram of whey.

The production of whey protein involves specialized filtering techniques to isolate the protein. After filtration, the protein is spray-dried and powdered for easy use by supplement manufacturers. Additional color and flavor can be added if desired.
